We Visit Milos, Greece
It’s day eight on our journey sailing the Greek Isles with Explora Journeys, and today, we visit the island of Milos, Greece.
Milos: A Cycladic Gem of History and Natural Beauty
Nestled in the Aegean Sea, the volcanic island of Milos is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends ancient history with breathtaking landscapes. This Cycladic gem has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, with its strategic location and mineral wealth playing crucial roles in its development over millennia.
A Rich Historical Tapestry
Milos’s history is as diverse as its terrain. The island’s obsidian, a volcanic glass, was highly prized in prehistoric times for crafting tools and weapons. This valuable resource made Milos a significant trade hub as early as 7000 BC, marking some of the earliest recorded maritime trade in world history.
The island’s most famous historical site is undoubtedly Phylakopi, considered the first city of Milos and one of the most significant Bronze Age settlements in the Aegean. Located on the north shore, Phylakopi offers visitors a glimpse into a thriving urban center from 2800-1000 BC. Today, the site appears as a collection of ancient stone walls and foundations, inviting visitors to imagine the bustling life that once existed here.
When we visited, the historical site was fenced off for the season, but we were able to witness some of the remarkable hideaways that pirate ships used tucked away in the coastline.
Adamantas: The Gateway to Milos
The main port city of Milos, Adamantas (also known as Adamas), serves as the primary entry point for most visitors. This charming town, established in 1824 by refugees from Crete, has evolved into a vibrant hub with a range of accommodations, restaurants, and amenities. Adamantas is an ideal base for exploring the island, with its central location providing easy access to Milos’s numerous attractions.
Spend some time walking around this city for shopping and sightseeing. When we were there, our guide recommended having lunch at Volta. Carol enjoyed the best gyro EVER while I noshed on this fabulous salad with local cheese and greens.
Sarakiniko Beach: A Lunar Landscape
Perhaps the most iconic location on Milos is Sarakiniko Beach, often referred to as a “moonscape” due to its otherworldly appearance. Located on the northern coast, Sarakiniko is characterized by its smooth, white volcanic rocks sculpted by wind and waves over millennia. The stark contrast between the bone-white formations and the deep blue Aegean Sea creates a surreal and highly photogenic landscape.
Visitors to Sarakiniko can explore the unique rock formations, swim in the crystal-clear waters, or simply marvel at the extraordinary scenery. It’s worth noting that the beach lacks facilities, so it’s advisable to bring essentials like water, snacks, and sun protection.
Mandrakia: A Picturesque Fishing Village
For those seeking a taste of traditional Cycladic charm, the tiny fishing village of Mandrakia is a must-visit destination. Often described as the most beautiful fishing village on Milos, Mandrakia is built around a small circular harbor. The village is famous for its colorful syrmata – boat garages built into the sides of cliffs – which create a striking visual against the blue sea.
Overlooking the village is the small church of Zoodohos Pigi, adding to the picturesque setting. While Mandrakia is small, it’s home to Medousa, one of the best restaurants on the island, offering spectacular views over the crashing waves.
From its ancient ruins to its unique geological formations and charming villages, Milos offers a diverse and enriching experience for visitors. Whether you’re interested in exploring historical sites, lounging on distinctive beaches, or immersing yourself in traditional Greek island life, Milos has something to offer. As you wander through its lunar landscapes, delve into its rich history, and enjoy its coastal charms, you’ll discover why this unsung Cycladic island is truly a paradise worth exploring.
Carol and I were sailing the Greek Isles on a glorious 5-star cruise with our friends from Explora Journeys.
