Experiencing the Cliffs of Moher
Experiencing the Cliffs of Moher
The Atlantic wind hit us before we ever reached the edge of the Cliffs of Moher.
Although it was July 4, 2022, the air was chilly, the skies were dramatic, and Carol quickly zipped up her jacket as the steady wind swept in from the Atlantic Ocean.
Within moments, we understood why the Cliffs of Moher are considered one of Ireland’s most iconic natural attractions.
Stretching nearly eight miles along Ireland’s rugged west coast and rising more than 700 feet above the crashing Atlantic, the Cliffs of Moher are breathtaking in every sense of the word. While photographs capture their beauty, nothing compares to standing at the cliff’s edge and experiencing their sheer scale for yourself.
We visited the Cliffs of Moher during our Luxury Gold Ultimate Ireland journey, and looking back, they remain one of the highlights of what is still one of our favorite land tours anywhere in the world.
Our First Impression
The dramatic skies, the crashing waves hundreds of feet below, and the constant Atlantic breeze combined to create an unforgettable first impression. The Cliffs of Moher aren’t polished or predictable. They’re wild, rugged, and unmistakably Irish.
One thing we quickly learned is that the Atlantic coast creates its own weather. Even in early July, jackets were essential. If you’re planning a visit, our advice is simple: dress for the weather, not the calendar.
A windproof or waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and an extra layer will help you enjoy your visit regardless of what Mother Nature has planned.
Exploring the Cliffs
The Cliffs of Moher are surprisingly easy to explore thanks to a network of walking paths that follow the coastline. Around nearly every bend, another spectacular viewpoint appears, making it difficult to stop taking photographs.
The excellent visitor center provides exhibits, a café, restrooms, and everything you need before heading out onto the walking trails. From there, it’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring the cliffs at your own pace.
One of the most recognizable landmarks is O’Brien’s Tower, built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O’Brien. Believing travelers would one day journey from around the world to experience the cliffs, he constructed the tower to provide an even better viewpoint.
Nearly two centuries later, he was absolutely right.
Standing near O’Brien’s Tower, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, the dramatic coastline, and, on clear days, the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, and the mountains of Connemara.
If you visit during nesting season, you’ll likely see puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, and other seabirds soaring effortlessly on the Atlantic winds.
Our advice? Don’t rush your visit. Walk the paths, stop at the overlooks, and simply enjoy the scenery. Sometimes the best travel memories come from slowing down and appreciating one of nature’s masterpieces.
Why We Recommend Exploring Ireland by Land
The Cliffs of Moher were one of the highlights of our Luxury Gold Ultimate Ireland journey and remain one of our favorite memories from our first visit to the Emerald Isle.
While some ocean cruises include a visit to the Cliffs of Moher, we believe Ireland is a destination that’s best experienced on the ground.
A thoughtfully planned small group land tour gives you the time to truly appreciate iconic places like the Cliffs of Moher while also discovering charming villages, historic castles, rolling green countryside, lively pubs, and the warm hospitality that make Ireland so special.
Our Luxury Gold journey struck a wonderful balance between guided sightseeing and free time, allowing us to experience Ireland at a relaxed pace while still seeing many of the country’s most famous sights.
