If you’ve been thinking about a Viking River Cruise in Europe, an extraordinary way to accomplish the adventure is during the Christmas season.
A great many of our Christmas traditions originated in Europe. And, during this festive time of year, Europe’s great cities roll out the welcome mat with fabulous Christmas Markets in their central squares along with the normal sites that summer visitors enjoy.
Gone are the massive crowds of summer travelers, and during this time of year you’ll find the locals shopping in the Christmas Markets for unique seasonal gifts, while enjoying a fresh gingerbread cookie and a piping-hot mug of glühwein: a traditional wintertime libation comprised of hot mulled wine, cinnamon, cloves, and other spices.
Come explore the Christmas Markets of the Danube with us, and enjoy 2-for-1 cruise and up to FREE air prices!
Several times throughout the course of the year, we like to explore fabulous destinations around the world and invite our readers and subscribers to come along with us.
And, with this exciting 8-day Viking River Cruise on the Danube (Budapest to Passau), we’ll be exploring four countries, fabulous cities like Budapest, Vienna, and Salzburg; as well as exploring their Christmas Markets, historical sites, and much more!

But Dave, what about the weather? Will it be cold?
Well, frankly, we were concerned about that too! In our Internet searches, we’ve found folks on this very river cruise who have experienced nothing but a few dribbles of rain a few days, to glorious sunny skies, to 10 inches of snow back in 2010. Although, the 10 inches of snow was during a very bad winter and not common at all.
Plus, you should remember, our ships will dock us in the center of town. So, it’s not like we’ll be walking from the hinterlands to get around. And, if you get cold, you can simply head back to your stateroom, duck into a local pub for a hot toddy, or more likely, be shopping and exploring local attractions.
The key is to layer your clothing, be prepared for most anything, and give particular consideration to your footwear. Warm, dry feet = happy traveler!
The Viking River Cruise Danube Waltz Itinerary

Explore Budapest’s imperial and Art Nouveau delights, and take a comprehensive tour of beautiful Bratislava’s baroque and Gothic buildings and fountains. In Austria, discover why Vienna is “the waltz capital,” sail through the spectacular Wachau Valley, and explore the cobblestone streets and charming town squares of Dürnstein. And in Germany, admire Passau’s ancient fortress and Italianate architecture. Includes a tour of the 900-year-old baroque Benedictine abbey at Melk and a full-day excursion to the scenic city of Salzburg.
The Magic of European Christmas: Sailing dates between November 29 and December 20 will include Christmas markets. Here, the spirit and romance of the holidays come alive with the scent of gingerbread and the tunes of traditional carols around every corner. Whichever Christmas markets you visit, you’ll enjoy a wonderful feast of tasty treats, as well as dozens of stalls brimming with unique and inspiring handcrafted gifts.
DAY 1 – Budapest
Welcome to Budapest, capital of Hungary. Transfer to your ship from the airport.* After boarding, the afternoon is yours to relax or do a bit of exploring; if your arrival schedule permits, you may join an organized walk to Budapest’s famous covered market housed in the three-story Great Market Hall established in 1897. Return to your ship for a traditional Hungarian dinner. (D)
DAY 2 – Budapest
Today we visit highlights of both the older “Buda” and more cosmopolitan “Pest” sides of the city, starting with Pest’s National Opera House and historic Heroes’ Square. In Buda, walk along Fishermen’s Hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church. Enjoy lunch aboard with the rest of the day to explore on your own—you may wish to visit the Art Nouveau Gellért Spa or one of the many other lavish facilities in this “City of Healing Waters.” Return to your ship for dinner and evening departure. (B, L, D)
DAY 3 – Bratislava
Arrive in Bratislava this afternoon and embark on a walking tour of Slovakia’s charming capital—the only national capital that borders two other countries, Austria and Hungary—with a long and fascinating history. See attractions like the medieval Town Hall complex and fortifications at Michael’s Tower, baroque Jesuit Church and Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral, and pass by several Habsburg-era baroque palaces before returning to your ship. This evening you can relax or take a walk before a late departure. (B, L, D)
DAY 4 – Vienna
Today we tour the Austrian capital of Vienna. Ride along the Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls in the mid-19th century. See some of Vienna’s baroque architecture, including the world-famous Opera House, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and Hofburg Palace. Return to your ship for lunch. The rest of the day is yours to further explore—as always, your Program Director can help you plan your free time. Or you may choose to join an optional tour of Schönbrunn Palace, the Versailles of Vienna, graced by a number of formal gardens, classical statuary, the world’s oldest zoo and the “Roman ruin” erected in 1778. After dinner, relax or enjoy an optional classical concert. (B, L, D)
DAY 5 – Dürnstein & Melk
This morning, we dock at the picturesque Wachau Valley town of Dürnstein, where you can explore on your own, or take an optional stroll with your Program Director to see the town’s highlights. After lunch on board, visit the 900-year-old abbey at Melk, a Benedictine monastery that was originally one of Leopold II’s castles. See its spectacular wall and ceiling frescoes, note the library’s comprehensive collection of medieval manuscripts, and admire the graceful spiral staircase. Rejoin your ship and cruise through dinner. (B, L, D)
DAY 6 – Linz & Salzburg
Awaken in Linz and set off on an all-day excursion to the beautiful Austrian city of Salzburg, famous as the location for the film, The Sound of Music. Ride through the scenic Austrian countryside to Salzburg’s Old Town area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and take a walking tour featuring the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Hohensalzburg Fortress just above the city center. You have some free time to enjoy Salzburg’s narrow cobbled streets and colorful shops and get lunch in one of the charming cafés, then return aboard for dinner and a late-evening departure. (B, D)
DAY 7 – Passau
Sail into Passau early this morning as you sit down for breakfast. Join a morning walking tour of Passau’s Italianate Old Town area, passing by the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century fortress that served as a bishop’s stronghold for several centuries. Enjoy a concert on Europe’s largest pipe organ in St. Stephan’s Cathedral†. After lunch, your afternoon is free to spend at leisure enjoying the sights and sounds of Passau. Board your ship and relax before a dinner featuring German delicacies.
†Passau organ concert is only available May 1-October 31 and is closed on Sunday.
DAY 8 – Passau
After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the Munich airport for your return flight.* Or, extend your journey with 3 additional nights in the lovely Czech capital of Prague. (B)
The following meals are included:
B = Breakfast; L = Lunch; D = Dinner
*Airport meet & greet transfers included when air is purchased from Viking River Cruises.

We took this cruise last year and it was fabulous! How much fun it would have been to have you guys along? BIG fun!
Hi guys, how was the weather when you were there? I sure we’re going to get lots of questions about that. And yes, it would have been BIG fun!
I just received this notice, today, Aug. 1, 2014. It would have been nice, since the deadline is June 30, 2014! This is the very first time this offer had been posted on my page. 🙁
Diane, I’m not sure where you’re seeing a June 30 deadline. The latest offer w/ FREE air is offered through the end of August. I must have missed something as I’ve been updating this piece. Where did you see the June deadline?
Diane, I found the June 30 deadline that I missed in my text. Sorry to cause you frustration! These offers keep changing, but again, our most recent offer ends on August 31st. Come join us! 🙂
