Carol and I are just back from our fun-filled river cruise with AmaWaterways on the River Rhine sailing from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Basel, Switzerland. I captured this photograph from the balcony of our suite at the Hotel Palace Luzern in Lucerne, Switzerland.
We have a LOT of destination photos to share, as well as travel tips and our firsthand thoughts about sailing with AmaWaterways. As I sit here with my jet-lagged mind, here are a few of the broad topics we’ll be sharing over the coming weeks:
- Our experience sailing with AmaWaterways. This was our fourth European river cruise and we’ve now sailed the Danube, the Rhine, as well as the Bordeaux and Burgundy wine regions in the south of France. And so far, we’ve sailed with Viking (twice), Uniworld, and now AmaWaterways. It is our intention to sample all of the major river cruise lines that market themselves to the U.S. and to also sample the various river options available.
- River Cruise Directions. The River Rhine has a fairly strong current and we’ve come home with new opinions about which direction to sail the river. Neither is right or wrong, but we do have some new considerations to share with you.
- We regret that we only had two extra days in Amsterdam, and would have loved more time in Switzerland as well. I can see us hopping over to Amsterdam again, and then flying over to Switzerland for a 10-land land journey.
- Boy, did we ever hit the jackpot with the weather. As we were sailing the first week of April, we went expecting light jacket weather and perhaps some rain. While we were a little early for the tulips in Amsterdam, we enjoyed sunny skies every day, never saw a drop of rain, and high-temps during the day were in the mid-to-high 60s. As you can see in my photograph above, another benefit about sailing in early April was that there was still snow on the mountain tops and there were no crowds.
Well, that’s it for now. We spent nearly 15 hours in the air, endured a 7-hour layover in Newark, and to make matters worse, I didn’t sleep a wink on the plane. And, as I only slept 4 hours last night with my body clock on European time, I can feel a nap coming on real soon.
I hope you enjoyed my photograph of Lucerne, and stay tuned for lots more from our recent adventures with AmaWaterways.

I loved following you via FB on your trip up the Rhine. Thanks for sharing all the beautiful pictures. As I’ve been to and on the Rhine it brought back lovely memories.I’m interested in the topics you plan to cover on future postings, they sound both relevant and interesting. My husband and I will be traveling to Europe soon.
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for the kind words. We used FB primarily as a photo collection while we were on our journey. We will now circle back around and write articles about our journey that will include tips about river cruising, AmaWaterways and how they compare with the competition, as well as a lot more photographs from our journey. Stay tuned….
Oh, this summer we will be doing an ocean cruise with Azamara Club Cruises from Athens to Venice and will be featuring all of the destinations involved as well as a glimpse into Azamara and their unique position in the marketplace. And, in the fall we’re highlighting a cruise with Crystal Cruises on a sailing from NYC to Montreal. We seem to be doing a lot of cruises of late. 🙂
