More Than Just a Giant Rock

Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock, is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Experiencing Australia’s Uluru is far more than visiting an iconic rock. Standing before this sacred sandstone monolith in the heart of the Outback is an unforgettable experience that even photographs and video only begin to capture.

Known as Ayers Rock for more than a century, the landmark officially returned to its traditional Aboriginal name, Uluru, in recognition of its deep cultural significance to the Anangu people, the Traditional Owners of the land. Their connection to Uluru stretches back thousands of years, and visitors are encouraged to experience the site with respect while learning about one of the world’s oldest living cultures.

Uluru itself is extraordinary. Rising nearly 1,150 feet above the surrounding desert and measuring almost six miles around its base, geologists believe the visible rock is only a small portion of the formation, with much more extending beneath the surface. Formed more than 500 million years ago, Uluru changes color throughout the day as the angle of the sun shifts, making every visit a little different.

A Rare Welcome

We arrived at Uluru at approximately 6:30 p.m. on November 6, 2024, expecting to witness one of Australia’s famous Outback sunsets. Instead, we were treated to something even more spectacular.

A rare thunderstorm swept across the landscape. Because Uluru receives relatively little rainfall each year, watching dark clouds gather over the massive sandstone formation was extraordinary in itself. Then, just as quickly as the storm arrived, it moved on. The evening sun broke through the clouds, revealing the spectacular rainbow captured in our featured photograph. It became one of our favorite travel moments from Australia.

If you look closely at the photo, you’ll notice two long shadows stretching across the foreground. Those are ours. I’m the shadow on the left, camera in hand, trying to capture the perfect shot while Carol stood beside me taking in the scene. I love how those silhouettes add another layer to the photograph, reminding us that we were fortunate enough to witness this remarkable moment firsthand.

Travel Tip

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, be prepared for mosquitoes, especially if there’s been recent rain. Fortunately, Tauck (our tour guides) anticipated the conditions and provided mosquito head nets for everyone in our group. As you can see from our photo, they may not be the most fashionable travel accessory, but they worked remarkably well and allowed us to enjoy our time at Uluru in comfort. If you’re visiting on your own, we’d definitely recommend bringing one along.
