5G, Personal Hotspots, and Travel
5G and personal hotspots will change how we access the Internet when we travel.
If you recall, I shared that we switched our phone carrier from Verizon to T-Mobile’s Magenta 55+ plan a few months ago.
Not only have we saved a fair amount of money with added benefits each month, but we’ve been delighted with the service as we’ve traveled internationally.
We are currently in Northern Michigan. We rented a home on a lake to spend some time with family. To my great surprise, I’ve got 5G service with four bars on my iPhone 13 PRO.
The house has Wi-Fi available, but for reasons unknown, they wanted us to call for the password upon our arrival.
Seeing that I had a strong 5G signal, we ignored the in-house Wi-Fi and accessed the Internet with our phones.
Further, we created a personal hotspot on my phone that Carol has been able to access on her computer, and we even streamed Jurassic World: Dominion last night for a fun movie night.
I upgraded my phone to the iPhone 13 PRO a while back for its new camera and to have a 5G compatible phone. So far, I’ve been beyond pleased with both.
So What’s My Point?
5G and its upcoming blazing speeds are going to change the world in a lot of ways. And for international travelers, it will give us Internet in our pockets nearly anywhere in the world. In the future, we won’t need to put up with all the nonsense necessary to connect to Wi-Fi in a hotel or on a cruise ship.
And, if Elon Musk has his way, his new Starlink satellite highspeed broadband system will give us 5G across the globe.
In the meantime, if you haven’t already, consider upgrading your phone to a 5G compatible phone and learn how to create a mobile hotspot with your phone.
I’m looking forward to the day when I no longer need to say, “what’s the password for the Wi-Fi.”
