UK Travel Alert: New Electronic Authorization Required
UK Travel Alert: New Electronic Authorization Required
Attention U.S. and Canadian travelers! A significant change is coming to your UK travel plans. Starting January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom will implement its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for all U.S. and Canadian passport holders entering or transiting through the UK.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital travel permission that will be required for visa-exempt travelers, including Americans and Canadians, who wish to visit or transit through the United Kingdom. This new system is part of the UK’s post-Brexit reforms aimed at strengthening border security and managing migration flows more effectively.
Key Details
Application Process:
- U.S. and Canadian travelers can apply for the ETA starting November 27, 2024
- Applications can be submitted online through the UK government’s website or the “UK ETA” mobile app.
- Each traveler, including children, must apply separately.
Cost and Validity:
- The ETA costs £10 (approximately $13 USD).
- It allows for multiple entries over two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Processing Time:
- Decisions are typically made within three business days.
Travel Permissions:
The ETA allows holders to:
- Visit the UK for up to six months for tourism, business, or short-term study.
- Transit through the UK.
- Enter the UK multiple times within its validity period.
Important Considerations
- Plan Ahead: Apply for your ETA well in advance of your travel date to avoid any last-minute issues.
- Not a Visa: While required for entry, the ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK.
- Passport Link: The ETA is electronically linked to your passport. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.
- Common Travel Area: British and Irish citizens are exempt from the ETA requirement.
The introduction of the UK ETA system aligns with similar practices in other countries, such as the U.S. ESTA program. While it adds an extra step to travel planning, it aims to create a more streamlined and secure entry process for visitors to the United Kingdom. Stay informed and plan ahead to ensure smooth travels to the UK in 2025 and beyond!

Thank you for this information. I had no idea.
Hi Kim, you’re welcome. We put it in the newsletter last weekend and made a social media post, but we figured we should send a separate email for this important notice. Happy Holidays!
Thank you for keeping us up to date.
Our pleasure. Happy Holidays, Deborah.
Thanks for the update. Happy Holidays
You’re welcome, and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Will this apply to Islands in the Caribbean?
No. This currently just pertains to folks from the U.S. and Canada flying to Europe.
Our current Viking flight plan for May 2025 does not take us through the UK. But should we proceed to apply for this authorization in case the flight plans change?
Hmmm. I’m guessing that this might be overkill. If your flight plans were to change, you could avoid the UK in creating the new flights.
