Travel Photo: The Florence Cathedral
Note: click photograph for a larger view
We captured this photograph of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower (Florence Cathedral), or the Duomo as it is ordinarily called, near dusk as we were strolling the historic center of Florence, Italy,
The Duomo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the major tourist attractions to those visiting the Tuscan region of Italy.
While a bit difficult to see in this particular photograph, the exterior is faced with green, pink, and white marble mined from nearby quarries.
Construction on the Duomo began in 1296, and even today the dome is the largest brick dome ever constructed.
We’ll have much more for you on the Florence Duomo when we return home.
