Top 5 Luxury Ocean Cruise Destinations

The folks over at Cruise Industry News are out with their listing of the top destinations for luxury cruise brands in 2019.

Each year they compile all of the deployments of the various luxury cruise lines and produce this interesting information for us to consider.

Not surprisingly, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe command a whopping 43% of all luxury cruise itineraries.  It’s no secret that American baby boomer travelers love Europe.  And, it is also no secret that these ships are full of American baby boomers.

Also interesting in this article is that Viking commands 29.9% market share of the Mediterranean cruise market followed by Crystal, Seabourn, and Regent.  Also, the report shares that Regent leads the way in Alaska with 26.9% of the market followed by Crystal and Silversea.

So, what are we to learn from this list? Well…

• If you want to enjoy a Mediterranean or Northern Europe ocean cruise, you should consider booking a year or more in advance as nearly half of all cruises are in these two destinations.
• The Caribbean is still popular with luxury travelers looking to get out of the cold in the northern regions of the U.S.  But, more and more, we’re hearing that baby boomers are kind of over the Caribbean and looking for alternatives.  Therefore, in the winter months, we’re seeing growth in South America, Australia, and Asia/Pacific regions.
• We are also beginning to see baby boomer travelers that have sailed most of Europe’s rivers on river cruises looking for new and exciting destinations.  I fully expect to see these folks booking the vast number of 200-person expedition ships that are coming down the pike in the next few years.
