Silversea Expeditions: High Bluff Island, Nunavut, Canada
It’s day seven on our Silversea Expeditions cruise, and this morning, we visited High Bluff Island, Nunavut, Canada.
Shhhhh. Don’t tell anyone, but we opted out of the morning zodiac cruise today.
The passengers on our ship were divided into eight zodiac groups. We were in group eight.
On the first day, our group was the last zodiac group out, and they would rotate the groups so that no one group had to be the first one out each morning. Well, on this day, our group was heading out at 8:00 in the morning, and well, we didn’t feel like getting up at six to shower, have breakfast, don our Arctic gear, and be ready to ship out at 8:00.
So we played hooky and had a relaxing morning on the ship. The danger in doing this, of course, is that you might miss something really spectacular.
Well, look at what we missed!
I photographed the same iceberg from the ship. But without the zodiac in front to give you some scale, my photograph is nowhere near as impressive.
High Bluff Island, Nunavut, Canada
High Bluff Island, also known as Qikiqtarjuarusiq, is located in the Canadian Arctic within the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut. Situated in the Hudson Strait near Baffin Island, it is an uninhabited island known for its remote and rugged landscape. The closest community is Kimmirut, approximately 33.6 km away. The island is part of a region characterized by its unique Arctic wildlife and dramatic natural scenery, including fjords, glaciers, and sea ice.
Icebergs around High Bluff Island in Nunavut primarily originate from glaciers in Greenland. These glaciers extend over the ocean and calve, breaking off into icebergs. The majority of icebergs in the North Atlantic, including those near Baffin Island, come from Western Greenland’s glaciers. Each year, about 40,000 medium to large icebergs calve off from Greenland, and many drift into the surrounding Arctic waters.
It would have been awesome to be up close and person with this iceberg.
Moral of the story: Think long and hard before you sleep in on an expedition cruise.
