Silversea Expeditions: Greenland’s Evighedsfjord

Silversea Expeditions: Greenland’s Evighedsfjord

It’s day thirteen on our Silversea Expeditions Arctic cruise, and today, we spent the whole day in Greenland’s Evighedsfjord.

Originating from tidewater glaciers that drain the Maniitsoq ice cap, Evighedsfjord flows through a deep canyon in an uninhabited, mountainous region. Its pristine beauty features active glaciers, floating icebergs, and steep basalt peaks that seem to touch the sky.

The fjord has become a popular destination for boat tours, offering visitors spectacular views of glaciers calving into the water. Adventure enthusiasts are drawn to the area for heliskiing and mountaineering opportunities. The sheer cliffs rising thousands of feet from the water’s edge create a sense of immense scale and grandeur.

Evighedsfjord’s seemingly endless expanse and untouched wilderness truly justify its name as the “Fjord of Eternity,” providing visitors with an unforgettable glimpse into Greenland’s raw and magnificent natural beauty. The fjord’s remote location and pristine conditions make it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers seeking to capture the essence of Greenland’s rugged coastline.

The Evigheds Glacier

The Evigheds Glacier, a magnificent ice formation in West Greenland, is a key feature of the awe-inspiring Evighedsfjord, also known as the Fjord of Eternity. This colossal ice cap regularly calves enormous chunks of ice into the fjord, creating a breathtaking spectacle of nature’s raw power. Surrounded by some of West Greenland’s highest mountains, with peaks soaring to 6,600 feet, the glacier is often veiled in an ethereal mist.
The Evigheds Glacier forms part of a stunning Arctic landscape that offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the region’s untamed beauty. The fjord and its environs provide excellent opportunities for exploration, with activities varying based on current weather and ice conditions. The glacier’s constant movement and calving contribute to this remarkable Arctic environment’s dynamic and ever-changing character, making each visit a unique experience.
