Silversea Expeditions: Arctic Cruise, Hudson Bay
Carol and I are sailing with Silversea Expeditions on an Arctic cruise in Hudson Bay.
When traveling, realizing that even the best-laid plans of mice and men can and sometimes will go awry is essential.
Airlines go on strike, hurricanes and inclement weather happen, and sadly, in our case, an ice warning on Hudson Bay forced Silversea Expeditions to begin our expedition cruise in Iqaluit instead of Churchill.
Churchill is the orange dot, and Iqaluit is the blue dot to the northwest.
This was a disappointment as Churchill is renowned for its polar bears. Furthermore, this is the time of year when as many as 3,000 beluga whales migrate to the Churchill River Basin.
However, as the ice map below shows, Churchill is completely socked in with ice, and navigation is impossible. Oh DARN!
As I wipe the figurative tears from my eyes, I am determined to turn lemons into lemonade. There isn’t anything I can do about this unfortunate situation, so I choose to roll with the punches and look forward to an exciting experience despite this setback.
Don’t feel too sorry for us; Carol and I will be sailing on one of the most luxurious expedition ships ever built. To learn more about our ship, the Silversea Endeavour, please CLICK HERE.
Okay, it’s time to travel to Iqaluit. We’ll fly nearly four hours from Phoenix to Montreal, spend a night at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, and then take a charter flight that takes around three hours to reach the city.
Stay tuned for more of our exciting adventures as we sail the Arctic with Silversea Expeditions over the next 14 days.
