Silversea Expedition: Arctic Caribou Sightings
Silversea Expedition: Arctic Caribou Sightings
It’s day #6 on our Silversea Expedition cruise, and we had Arctic caribou sightings with hundreds of animals.
It’s a beautiful day today, and here is a photograph I captured of the Silver Endeavour as we headed out for our afternoon zodiac cruise in Douglas Harbour, Canada.
First, let me say that it is wonderful to have a professional photographer/videographer onboard the ship with you. They have all the big lenses I don’t care to carry on my travels.
As we headed into the harbor, it wasn’t long before we all began spotting caribou with our binoculars. However, they were a long distance from the shore—perhaps up to a half mile away. This photograph is the best I could do with my Sony RX10iv:
This is a photograph of caribou taken by our onboard photographer, Eric Duran.
He was packing better photography gear than me, or he found a spot that allowed him a closer view. And if you look below, he even captured three caribou swimming across the fjord. The expedition scouts radioed our zodiac driver, but we were too far away to catch them swimming.
Caribou in the Canadian Arctic are remarkable creatures known for their impressive adaptability to the harsh Arctic environment.
These animals are vital to the local Inuit culture, providing food and materials for traditional crafts. Interestingly, caribou are also excellent swimmers, capable of traversing icy waters to migrate between islands and the mainland.
This skill allows them to navigate their expansive territory with ease, showcasing their resilience and strong connection to the diverse landscapes they inhabit. Whether crossing rivers or swimming in coastal waters, caribou exemplify the unique adaptations that enable them to thrive in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
Here are more of Eric’s drone photos:
Today was a spectacular day. We’re in the middle of nowhere, and I found myself pondering that very few have traveled here, except for perhaps the local Inuit, which makes you look at the world differently.
I asked Perplexity to write a haiku about this photo. This is what it came up with:
Rugged cliffs rise high
Turquoise waters kiss the shore
Lone boat charts its course
This haiku captures the essence of the image, highlighting the dramatic landscape with towering cliffs, the striking turquoise waters, and the solitary boat navigating through the scene. The contrast between the immense, unchanging cliffs and the small, moving boat creates a sense of scale and transience.
For all I know, Carol and I are both in the zodiac pictured in the photograph. I’m not sure. But I can tell you that I have fallen in love with the Arctic and its people.
