The stock market is up, and baby boomer travelers are busy traveling the world.
I was talking with a friend the other day, and he asked how it is that Carol and I seem to be well on our way to building a second very successful business.
After whining a bit about having to start another business in the first place after the stock market crash of 2008 decimated our early retirement plans; I gave pause to contemplate my answer.
I told him that there are 80,000,000 baby boomers. In the early-90s, Carol and I started a mortgage company and stood in front of these 80,000,000 baby boomers as they were buying their first homes, then second homes, and for some of them, their McMansions.
At the peak, we sold our mortgage company, accomplished our early-retirement plans, moved to Scottsdale and started to travel the world.
So, why is our business enjoying success? Well, there are a lot of reasons. But, one of them is that Carol and I are again standing in front of those 80,000,000 baby boomers. And what do they now want to do?
Travel!

Cheers! Here’s to traveling the world!
I say all of that to share with you that since the last presidential election, the stock market and travel have both been nothing but up, up, up.
Consider this: if you’re a retired baby boomer with $500,000 in retirement savings and you have the money invested in the stock market, then you have an extra $100K from this year’s stock market gains. And, if you have $1,000,000 in retirement savings, then you now have another $200,000 from this year’s stock market gains.
AND, what are these boomers doing with this new-found cash? Well, they’re taking some of it and doing river cruises, ocean cruises, expedition cruises, and land journeys all over the planet.
Just like the baby boomers created a massive housing spike in the 80s and 90s, they are now creating a massive spike in the travel industry.
I was reading an article in Cruise Industry News a while back (link), and it shared that there are a record 90 new cruise ships on order and they can’t seem to build them fast enough.
Hmmm. Maybe we should be investing in shipbuilding stocks.
Moral of the Story: book early, grasshopper! Every day we talk to people who can’t believe that 2018 travel opportunities are filling up so fast.
Carol and I have no major travel plans until May of 2018. So, we’re here and ready for your call.

A Classic Antarctica Cruise, Abercrombie & Kent
As we’re on a cool-climate theme this week, I thought I might share with you a classic Antarctic cruise from our friends at Abercombie & Kent.
This journey begins in Buenos Aires where you can enjoy an evening of tango dancing along with a sampling of the world-famous Argentinian beef and Malbec wine.
Also, if you have the time, we’d highly recommend the pre-extension up to see the eye-popping Iguazu Falls.
From there, you’re off to the charming port town of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, where you’ll board the luxurious Ponant Le Lyrial for a round-trip sailing to Antarctica.
If you’re not familiar with Ponant, then you’re in for a real treat. This is a posh, 5-star cruise ship offering a private balcony in every stateroom and suite, butler service in the suites, fabulous cuisine, and while on your Antarctic journey, you’ll enjoy Abercrombie & Kent’s expert expedition team.

Last week, we shared with you the Top 5 Luxury Travel Trends for 2018 as reported by Virtuoso’s 2018 Luxe Report.
One of the interesting trends we learned about was that seasoned travelers are in search of fresh destinations and that they have been setting their sights on chillier climes.
While we haven’t seen a slow down in the demand for European river cruises, we too are seeing an uptick in the experienced traveler’s desire to explore the road-less-traveled. And now that options exist that allow travelers to reach the far corners of the world in comfort, destinations like Iceland, Alaska, Antarctica, the Arctic, and even polar bear safaris are becoming very popular.
How about you? Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone a bit and journey to one of these “cooler” destinations?
To help you explore the idea, click around on our links below:
If you haven’t been to Alaska yet, that might be the easiest first step in exploring the globe’s cooler climates. Carol and I have been three times and are going back again this summer.
If you’d like to see a polar bear up-close-and-personal, that is easily accomplished in Canada during the great polar bear migration in Churchill, Manitoba.
What ever your desires might be for a cool-climate getaway, we’ve got the experience and contacts to make that happen for you.
For more information or to book a cool-climate getaway, call Roaming Boomers Travel Services at (480) 550-1235 or use our convenient online information request (click here) and we’ll reach out to you.

AmaWaterways Partners with Master Chef and James Beard Award-Winning Cookbook Author Joanne Weir
Collaboration includes New PBS Series and Culinary Cruise
Calabasas, CA – (Nov. 20, 2017) – AmaWaterways proudly announced today its partnership with Master Chef and James Beard Award-winning cookbook author Joanne Weir, as the lead sponsor of her new PBS series, “Plates and Places with Joanne Weir.” Two episodes of the series, set to debut in February 2018, were filmed in Fall 2017 during AmaWaterways’ Enchanting Rhine river cruise, capturing the culinary highlights on board as well as regional specialties from the cities and towns along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel. During the cruise, which took place on board the fleet’s newest ship, AmaKristina, Weir shared her love of cooking with guests through cooking demonstrations and the addition of small touches to the tasting menu at the intimate Chef’s Table restaurant.
AmaWaterways is continuing its collaboration with Weir and her team by presenting a special sailing, Taste of Bordeaux – Culinary Cruise Hosted by Joanne Weir. The seven-night cruise will embark on July 26, 2018, traveling through the Bordeaux region along the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Fans of Weir will have the opportunity to engage with the celebrated chef both on board and during shore excursions exploring local culinary and viticulture highlights. The author of 18 cookbooks, including her latest, Kitchen Gypsy, will also give culinary presentations on board the AmaDolce, which are open to all guests.
“Food and wine have become such critical parts of the way travelers expect to experience a country or city that it is important that we continue to propose a diversity of culinary experiences on our ships and during our excursions,” said Rudi Schreiner, president and co-owner of AmaWaterways. “Our culinary team, led by our award-winning Executive Chef Primus Perchtold, always strives to bring unique epicurean experiences to our guests. We are proud to be collaborating with Joanne as she not only brings a wealth of experience but a warm, engaging way of expressing and sharing her love of cooking with fresh ingredients paired with regional wines.”

The 2018 Culinary Cruise takes guests through the Bordeaux region of France, one of the world’s undisputed wine capitals, and will be punctuated by a comprehensive choice of complimentary shore excursions highlighting French culture, food, and wine, including visits to vineyards and a wine festival exclusive to AmaWaterways guests. Led by knowledgeable local guides, guests will make their way through the renowned vineyards of Saint-Émilion, Pauillac, Pomerol and Libourne, discovering timeless traditions from the winemakers themselves. They will also visit iconic chateaux for wine tastings, including a tasting at the 14th-century Château de Montaigne, once the former residence of French philosopher Michel de Montaigne. Optional pre-cruise stays in Paris or a post-cruise tour of the Loire Valley are also available.
“I travel a lot, and for me, this recent river cruise with AmaWaterways was beyond incredible! I love the fact that you don’t have to drive a car from city to city or pack and unpack every day. For a whole week, you have a home away from home on a luxurious river ship in a beautifully appointed stateroom, and the quality and variety of the food and wine are excellent. I can’t say enough about the warm, friendly service – there isn’t a detail that AmaWaterways hasn’t thought of,” said Joanne Weir about her recent cruise on the Rhine. “I am so excited to return in July to host the Bordeaux cruise as this region holds special personal memories for me. I can’t think of a better way to experience the food and wine diversity of this region than on board an AmaWaterways ship.”
