Family Getaway: Hotel del Coronado
San Diego’s Hotel del Coronado is a fabulous destination for a multi-generational family getaway.
Carol and I have visited the Hotel del Coronado four times. And, two of our visits have been multi-generational getaways.
We first visited the AAA Four-Diamond Hotel del Coronado back in our travel blogger days in 2010.

Carol admiring the beach with our grandson
We love historic properties and continue to visit them whenever we get the chance. And, as much as we loved our visit back in 2010, we felt that the property was beginning to feel a little tired.
However, in 2015, the property was purchased by the deep-pocketed Blackstone Group. And today, the property is in the midst of a $200 million reimagination that is bringing the property up to the expectations of today’s demanding luxury travelers.
And WOW! What a difference a couple hundred million dollars can make.
While still preserving the hotel’s historic charm, we immediately noticed a significant difference. In fact, I’m quite certain that the Hotel del Coronado will be on our go-to list for future getaways with our extended family.
Top 4 Reasons We Love the Hotel Del Coronado for Our Multi-Generational Family Getaways
Social-Distancing at the Hotel del Coronado

As we were traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic, safety for our family was top of mind.
Thankfully, the hotel has limited reservations making social distancing on the beach easily accomplished. You can learn more about that at this link.
Ryan was very comfortable wearing his batman mask during the day, albeit upside down. 🙂
Furthermore, he and grandma found private places on the large beach to make sandcastles.
New Cabana Ocean View Terrace Rooms

While visiting, we enjoyed adjoining Cabana Ocean View Terrace Rooms with a fun fire pit.
These rooms surround The Del’s new pool and offer spectacular beachfront ocean views. For our grandson, this was the cat’s meow. The pool was less than a minute away, and sandcastle heaven was just outside our patio.
These rooms offer 1 king bed with a pull-out sofa or 2 queen beds. The rooms were ample-sized at 400 Sq Ft and featured a large walk-in shower in the bathroom. Furthermore, with all of the patio seating available, we never felt crowded in the room. It was just perfect. Furthermore, when Ryan felt the urge to visit grandma and grandpa, he simply ran from his cabana to ours.
The Del Beach

Besides the historic property and it’s modern luxury amenities, the fabulous Del Beach is certainly a major draw for multi-generational travelers.
While parents and grandparents will enjoy barefoot morning walks on the beach, there is no shortage of fun for grandchildren of all ages.
Plus, as an added benefit, you will enjoy the airshow overhead as jets, helicopters, and other military aircraft cruise overhead preparing to land at the nearby naval base.
Dining at the Hotel del Coronado

The Hotel del Coronado offers its guests eight different dining options.
We enjoyed grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches in the mornings, and fish tacos from the Beach + Taco Shack in the afternoons. And one evening, we enjoyed this fabulous sea-to-table wood-grilled Pacific Striped Bass. It was tender and full of flavor. MAJOR YUM!
Further, to top it all off, we enjoyed a fabulous evening of s’more on the beach! That was a BIG hit with our grandson.

Fall Travel Survey for 2020
Virtuoso’s Fall Travel Survey for 2020 is hot off the press.
For the remainder of 2020, it seems that travelers plan on staying relatively close to home.
Further, survey respondents share that they are looking for international destinations during the holiday season. Further still, 2021 cruise bookings are strong.
If COVID-19 is soon controlled, then 2021 looks to be a solid year for international travel.
Top Seven Findings Regarding Fall Luxury Travel
- Seventy-nine percent of travelers would take part in a travel pod (defined as two or more households whose members have been following similar quarantine and social-distancing practices that make plans to vacation together)
- Seventy-six percent of travelers want to take a beach vacation
- One hundred percent of 18-25-year-olds are ready to travel, while less than 50 percent of those 41 years and older are not
- Seventy percent are traveling less than 1,500 miles from home
- Forty-three percent are booking hotels two weeks or less before their stay
- Popular hotel attributes include seclusion, private swimming pools, and golf
- Sixty-six percent are willing to fly, but they want the middle seat open. An empty middle seat now determines airline loyalty. Seventy-three percent would even pay extra for an airline ticket if it meant the middle seat next to them would remain open.

All-Inclusive Resorts: Mexico, Caribbean
All-Inclusive Resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean are showing an uptick in bookings for 2020, and 2021.
Dubbed by some as a “land cruise”, the appeal of the all-inclusive resorts is the one-price does it all convenience.
Before your journey, you will know your costs for lodging, food, cocktails, and even some included adventures.
We like the idea. When we return to international travel, the Grand Velas Los Cabos is at the top of our list.
However, if you have a different destination in mind, CLICK HERE for over 130 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the Caribbean, and more.
Be sure to use the filters at the top to shrink the list down to your desired destination.
Mexico is currently open to travelers from the U.S. However, use this updated list to see which of the Caribbean Islands are now available to international visitors.

Scottsdale Hiking: Granite Mountain Trailhead
If you’re looking for a fun and relatively easy hiking experience in Scottsdale, head out to the Granite Mountain Trailhead.
Now that the weather has finally cooled down here in Scottsdale, Carol and I made the Bootlegger and Granite Mountain Loop our first hike of the season.
While the trail is only 2.7 miles, you will experience 236 ft of elevation gain. Although, we found it to be very gradual and didn’t notice until my knees started to complain a bit on the way back down.

Bootlegger and Granite Mountain Loop
If you click the link above, the AllTrails app will give you directions to the trailhead.
There is a brand new ramada at the trailhead with plenty of parking, shade, and restrooms.
There is no drinking water at the ramada, so be sure to bring plenty of water for your hike.
Besides the well-groomed trails, you are sure to marvel as you walk through a granite boulder-field with massive boulders everywhere in sight.
Granite Mountain is a top-rated hiking destination. Therefore, get there early to avoid a crowded trail.
The AllTrails App
If you’re not planning to be in Scottsdale to hike the trails at the Granite Mountain Trailhead, you can easily find trails in your desired destination using the AllTrails App.
This was our first time using the app. We found it to be informative. Plus, when we were onsite, we downloaded the trail route to our iPhone. Doing this gave us live information as we progressed through the hike.
Give it a try and tell us what you think in the comments section below.
Disclosure: the folks at AllTrails gave us a complimentary subscription to their app so that we might share it with you. Thanks, AllTrails. We liked your app. A lot!
