MS Joy: Tauck’s Floating Boutique Hotel in Europe
Discovering the MS Joy: Tauck’s Floating Boutique Hotel in Europe
As we prepare to sail through the scenic waterways of Belgium and the Netherlands, we’re thrilled to be doing so aboard one of Tauck’s premier river ships: the MS Joy.
Part of Tauck’s Inspiration Class, the Joy is more than just a means of transportation—she’s a destination in her own right.
A More Spacious River Cruise Experience
What makes the MS Joy stand out from the crowd of river ships cruising Europe’s iconic rivers? It starts with the ship’s design and layout. While many ships on Europe’s rivers are similar in length and height—limited by locks and bridges—Tauck took a dramatically different approach to space allocation. Rather than maximizing passenger capacity, the Joy is intentionally configured to carry fewer guests: just 130, compared to the 190+ that many similarly sized ships accommodate.
The result? More elbow room, more personalized service, and a more relaxed onboard atmosphere.
Suites That Feel Like Home
This extra space is most evident in the staterooms. A remarkable 22 of Joy’s cabins are spacious 300-square-foot suites, complete with walk-in closets, roomy bathrooms with rainfall showers, and French balconies for soaking in riverside views. Even the standard cabins are thoughtfully designed and generously sized, with high-end touches that reflect Tauck’s commitment to comfort and quality.
Flexible, Upscale Dining Options
Dining aboard the Joy is equally elevated. In addition to the main Compass Rose restaurant, guests can enjoy more casual fare in Arthur’s, an alternative dining venue named after Tauck’s founder. With restaurants’ open-seating dining and resort casual dress codes, the culinary experience is deliciously flexible and never pretentious.
All-Inclusive and Enriching
Another key distinction is Tauck’s fully inclusive approach. Everything from shore excursions and gratuities to beer, wine, and spirits is included in the cruise fare. You won’t be nickel-and-dimed onboard—and you’ll enjoy curated experiences ashore, often with exclusive access not available to the general public.
Personal Connections and Thoughtful Service
Finally, it’s the staff and fellow guests that give the MS Joy her true personality. Tauck’s cruise directors and local guides are warm, knowledgeable, and truly invested in your experience. And with a smaller guest count, it’s easy to make connections that turn into lifelong friendships.
If you’re dreaming of a river cruise that blends luxury, comfort, and cultural enrichment—without the crowds—the MS Joy is a ship that lives up to her name.

The Roaming Boomers

Interesting! I noticed in the video that younger children were shown, is Tauck oriented towards a family cruise clientele? Also, the Joy was put into service in 2016, has it been refurbished recently?
Thanks!
Rich, Tauck has “Tauck Bridges” experiences for families, but their regular programming, while children are welcome, rarely have children as there is no programming for them. We are currently sailing on the MS Joy, and the ship is full of baby boomers. Also, the ship was last refurbished in 2023.
