Most Dangerous Countries for American Travelers
Travel Advisories and the Most Dangerous Countries for American Travelers
OK. This is information we all want to know. Right?
But, it is equally important to understand this information before we simply go off willy-nilly and write off a whole country before you have an understanding of the facts behind the numbers. Deal?
After all, if the United States were on this list, then we all know that there is a world of difference between traveling to the south side of Chicago versus some small farming community in the heart of our nation. Right?
The same can be said of Mexico. Mexico is a very large country, and certainly, some of the border areas are indeed dangerous. However, the vast majority of Mexico is filled with safe areas with locals very friendly to America travelers.
Further, the information in the charts to the right is distilled from many years of information and as we all know, time changes things.
Further, while Mexico shows up with the highest number of Americans killed, you must also understand that vastly more American travel to Mexico than any other nation in the world. Therefore, again, just looking at these numbers and making quick judgments is unfair.
For example, the article that I am sharing my reference material from shares that over 71 million people visited Mexico producing a death rate per capita of .84, while Pakistan has a per capita death rate of 3.54.
Therefore, Pakistan is significantly more dangerous than Mexico.
So, here’s your homework.
If you are considering a visit to any of the countries on this list, then go see what the U.S. State Department is currently advising click here, and then go read this article to understand better the findings behind the numbers presented above.
I struggled to share this information with you because I didn’t want to be an alarmist. On the other hand, If I were taking my bride to a destination on the road less traveled, I would want to go only if informed and with my eyes wide open.
Fair enough? 🙂

I feel you should present your rational and explanation before the chart. I’m sure there are many who look at the chart and don’t read the information after the chart. I travel to the Puerto Vallarta area every year. We do not stay in a AI resort. We stay at local Mexican places. I would rather vacation there as compared to Chicago, New Orleans, etc. I feel much safer in PV and besides that they appreciate our being there. They are very warm and welcoming people. I am sure if I went looking for trouble I could find it. We were there for a month this year and are planning a return trip for 6 weeks next year.
Hi Rand,
Thank you so much for sharing your highly informed viewpoint. I struggled with sharing this information at all. We send quite a few folks to Cabo and Puerto Vallarta every year and they all seem very pleased. Especially with Puerto Vallarta. 🙂
I agree with the Report. I would not dream of going to Mexica again, even though it was once one of my favorite places to vacation. Mexico is now home to many many of the DRUG LORD FAMILIES/Organizations that use to plague Colombia, South America. I have several friends who are from Mexico and they all tell me NOT to go, find another vacation spot. They tell me it is very bad, they do not even like to go back to visit because of the situation. It is not to be compared to USA. I guess the American’s gave up their war on Drugs South of the Boarder and it is now open season in Mexico…with Kidnappings, Killings, street hangings to make their presence known, local Farms being taken over by Drug Lords, Mexicans being forced to work in the industry again etc..etc… Its another ….Colombia S.A in the 1970’s-1980’s. They tell me its JUST a matter of time before the Gov;t will NO LONGER be able to protect the resort areas and towns around them.
This info comes from Mexican people themselves telling me this. I hear them discussing it all the time amongst them selves as well.
Certainly not any place I would consider vacationing or taking my family!
