When we started The Roaming Boomers® back in 2010, we had absolutely no idea that three years later we would be opening our own travel agency: Roaming Boomers Travel Services.

Just like you, we thought the Internet long ago killed the travel agency business.

However, as we began our travels around the world, we were shocked by the number of people that asked to come with us, or that would ask us to help them with travel planning.

As we’re entrepreneurial at heart, we saw the need and decided to see if we might fill that need.

In a recent interview on Bloomberg News’ Market Makers program, Virtuoso Chairman and CEO Matthew Upchurch shared a few interesting tidbits about the growth of today’s travel agencies, particularly in the luxury segment:

1. Virtuoso, that’s Carol and I, and 340 other travel agencies around the world, had $12.5 billion in sales last year, and Upchurch is predicting a 15% sales spurt in the coming year.
2. People are turning to professional travel advisors for their expertise, value-added propositions, and significant convenience in terms of planning time and worry.
3. Why would you have a wealth advisor in your life, and not a travel advisor to bring expertise to your travel experiences?
4. Upchurch shared that river cruising is hot, as well as multi-generational travel.

In the time we have been actively involved as travel advisors, we’ve quickly learned that folks feel overwhelmed with the choices on the Internet, and would prefer to have a trusted advisor and accomplished traveler in their court.
