For Pre and Post stays in Vancouver before your Alaska cruise, we recommend the Fairmont Waterfront.
When Carol and I took our 4th Alaska cruise, this time we stayed one night before our cruise in the Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver Hotel.
Fairmont Waterfront provides relaxed luxury on the west coast. Offering stunning water views of the inner harbor, majestic coastal mountains, Stanley Park and the sparkling city skyline, guests will be at the heart of all this vibrant city has to offer.

We LOVE the soaps in Fairmont Hotels.
The hotel is connected to the Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal and is just steps away from historic Gastown’s trendy scene, shopping on Robson Street and Stanley Park’s popular Seawall. We invite guests to explore the city on the hotel’s complimentary bicycles, enjoy a Chef’s tour of the 2,100 sqft rooftop organic garden, discover the honeybee apiary or relax poolside with a stunning backdrop of the North Shore mountains.
For those looking for a truly unique experience, Fairmont Gold is ideal; this “hotel within a hotel” provides guests with a dedicated concierge team, private lounge, a beautiful harbor-view patio, evening canapés and more.
Central to everything, with its peerless views, friendly staff, fabulous accommodations and enviable waterfront location, Fairmont Waterfront is your gateway to exploration for the Pacific Northwest.
Because the hotel is connected to the cruise ship terminal across the street, the hotel’s bellboys took the luggage from our room to the ship and we simply walked across the street to jump on our cruise ship.
Talk about convenient!
Plus, when you book the Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver Hotel on our website (available 24-7) in addition to great rates, you will also receive our legendary complimentary perks:
- Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
- Buffet breakfast daily, for up to two in-room guests
- $100 USD equivalent Food & Beverage credit to be utilized during stay (not combinable, no cash value if not redeemed in full. Credit may be used in ARC Restaurant, ARC Lounge or In-Room Dining)

Wall of Love: Montmartre, Paris, France

As Carol and I were strolling around Montmartre this spring with our Avalon Waterways tour guide, she brought us to the Wall of Love to snap a few photographs.
The Wall of Love (French: Le mur des je t’aime, lit. the I Love You Wall) is a love-themed wall of 40 square meters (430 sq ft) in the Jehan Rictus Garden Square in Montmartre, Paris, France. The wall was created in 2000 by calligraphist Fédéric Baron and mural artist Claire Kito and is composed of 612 tiles of enameled lava, on which the phrase ‘I love you’ is featured 311 times in 250 languages. Each tile is 21 by 29.7 centimeters (8.3 in × 11.7 in). It includes the words ‘I love you’ in all major languages, but also in rarer ones like Navajo, Inuit, Bambara, and Esperanto. The wall is open to public free of charge. The red splashes on the wall symbolize parts of a broken heart and can be gathered to form a full heart. (via Wikipedia)
The wall is in a beautiful park with lots of shade and benches and might be a lovely place for a little picnic lunch. 🙂

Travel Photo: Sacré-Cœur- Paris, France

When Carol and I made our first journey up the Eiffel Tower years ago, we looked across the landscape and saw the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur standing atop the highest point in all of Paris: butte Montmartre.
I set in my mind to visit the Sacré-Cœur, and it has taken us quite a number of years to actually make the journey.
If you’re feeling energetic, there are stairs leading up to the basilica. However, our Avalon Waterways tour guide had us approach the top of the butte via the funicular.
If you’re looking for something to do for a half-day in Paris, take a journey to Montmartre. Not only can you explore the basilica, but the village of Montmartre offers cafés, shopping, and oodles of photo opportunities as you stroll the quaint streets.
