Viceroy Resort and Spa ~ Palm Springs, California – One of the great missions of this baby boomer luxury online travel magazine is to unearth unique resorts that will bring a one-of-a-kind experience to our followers.
We believe we have accomplished that mission with the Viceroy Resort and Spa Palm Springs.
The very first thing you will notice when you walk in the front door is the modern interpretation of the 1930s Hollywood Regency style design. Viceroy Palm Springs can authentically present this style as the resort was built in the 1930s and was a favorite escape for Hollywood types such as Ann Miller, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Tyrone Power, Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, and even President Roosevelt.
Our one-night stay was accommodated in one of their premium studios located right behind the hedge in the top left of this photograph. There we enjoyed an amply spaced room and a delightful private patio tucked behind the hedge where we enjoyed one of the many fine bottles of wine purchased from our California Central Coast winery tours.
After a bit of relaxing, we walked across the courtyard to our table where we dined under the stars in the resort’s Citron restaurant headed by Executive Chef James Bailey and Sous Chef Stacey Hawkins.
Carol and I started off our meal sharing Heirloom Tomatoes.
We then diverged with Carol enjoying a very special Opaca Paca (Hawaiian Snapper)…
while I thoroughly enjoyed Citron’s signature Buttermilk Marinated Jidori Chicken.
Generally speaking, I don’t order chicken in a fine dining restaurant. However, when I see Jidori Chicken on the menu, I have oft swayed from that position.
As a special little treat, the chef sent out their interpretation of French Beignets. Major Yumminess!
Carol and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Viceroy Resort and Spa Palm Springs.
In the “keeping it real” category, our room did show some deferred maintenance in the form of peeling paint in the bathroom. But given our overall experience at this historic resort, I certainly wouldn’t let that interfere with our enthusiastic recommendation.
Furthermore, we didn’t see any such lack of attention anywhere else in the resort.
One of the things that also comes to my mind is the fact that for folks in the Phoenix Valley, this resort is only 3-5 hours away depending on your location.
The Viceroy Palm Springs would make an excellent choice for a special weekend,romantic getaway.
We are soon off to the historic, world-renowned Fairmont San Francisco Hotel. They are known for “turning moments into memories”. We can’t wait to gain a few new memories and report them back to you.
Zoo Lights ~ Phoenix Zoo ~ Phoenix, Arizona – Last night we attended Zoo Lights at the Phoenix Zoo.
The event featured more than 3.5 million lights and 600 glimmering animal light sculptures. But rather than attempting to describe this wonderful experience in text, I thought a short video would better explain the magic of this experience.
Las Noches de las Luminarias ~ Desert Botanical Garden ~ Phoenix, Arizona – For 33 consecutive years, the Desert Botanical Garden has presented Las Noches de las Luminarias (The Night of the Luminaries) to untold thousands of Valley residents and visitors.
The Roaming Boomers® were invited guests to this third night of festivities where we roamed about with wide-eyed glee at 8,000 hand-lit luminaries, enjoyed the musical entertainment of 11 different bands throughout the garden, hot cider, handbells, and even Dickens Carolers.
I thought a short video might do a better job of explaining this wonderful event than any number of words that I might present.
