Old Town Farmers’ Market ~ Scottsdale, Arizona – When we travel, we absolutely LOVE to visit the local farmers’ markets.
Farmers’ markets are a wonderful place for breakfast or lunch, a great place to visit with locals, and a wonderful place to purchase fresh organic foods for picnic lunches, breads, wine, cheeses, and fresh fruit while you’re traveling.
In our visit to Scottsdale’s Old Town Farmers’ Market, we found fresh baked goods, jams (David loves Arizona orange marmalade), hand-made pasta (pictured right), almost every conceivable vegetable (Arizona growers create produce in winter), Arizona wines, home-made tamales (YUM), cheeses, olive oils, fresh flown-in fish, artisan chocolates, hot home-made donuts (they were cleaned out in an hour), fresh Arizona citrus, and much, much, more.
The Old Town Farmers’ Market occurs Saturday’s from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., and directions can be found at the link just above.
Roaring Fork Restaurant ~ Scottsdale, Arizona – After church on Sunday, we teamed up with Susie Timm (Girl Meats Fork), her husband Eric, and headed off to Roaring Fork to sample their newly tendered Sunday Brunch.
For over a decade, Roaring Fork has been serving up “wood fired cooking that captures the spirit of bold American cuisine, creating flavors that crackle with a rugged edge”.
Further, Roaring Fork is from the same team that brought us the very successful Eddie V’s and Wildfish Seafood Grille.
The Brunch started on November 14th, will continue every Sunday through Mother’s Day, is served from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and includes a buffet style menu offering a bread table, savory Cold & Hot item station, Egg & Carving tables as well as a tasty dessert station. Menu items include:
Sticky Cinnamon Buns
Waffles with warm syrup and whipped cream
Candied jalapeno coleslaw
Apple walnut orzo salad
Classic eggs Benedict
Breakfast flat bread with spinach, tomatoes, eggs and white cheddar
Green Chile Pork Stew
Biscuits and Sausage Gravy
Sage and Cornbread Stuffing
Scalloped potatoes and roasted chilies
Green Chile cheese grits with cheddar and bacon
Pecan Pie Diamonds
Banana Foster bread pudding
Fruit tarts
In addition, signature Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s are available throughout brunch services for $5.00 each.
As we were seated at our table, immediately presented to us was this plate full of piping hot, sugar-glazed manna directly from heaven. Wow! What a wonderful first impression!
With so many delectable choices available, I (David) determined ahead of time that I was going to stick to breakfast-type fare, and only one plate full of food.
Even this decision was difficult with so many options, but I finally settled on Corn Bread Benedict, Chilequilles (w/ Roasted Chicken & Potatoes), and Green Chile Pork Stew (w/ Warm Buttered Tortillas). I’m so glad I now live in the Southwest. What an absolutely delightful variety of flavors. As I’m writing this, I find myself deeply wishing I had leftovers.
As the four of us enjoyed our food and conversation, it was now time for dessert. Carol and I were both on the verge of being full, so we opted to share….get this!….hot Banana Foster Bread Pudding.
I went to the dessert station, and brought back this wonderful, gooey dessert fit for the finest king’s table with the agreement that we would share. Carol would eat half, and then pass the plate to me to enjoy.
As we continued in our conversation, with not a small bit of salivation on my part, I glanced over and Carol had “shamefully I say, shamefully” consumed well over half!
ACK!
“Honey”, I said, “what happened to our agreement?”. She blushed, made a few feeble attempts at justifying her behavior, and off I went again to the dessert table.
In all the excitement, I also forget to photograph what was perhaps the pièce de résistance of the whole meal.
But, I did have joyous visions of Banana Foster Bread Pudding dancing in my head as I slept that night. Glorious! Standing ovation worthy!
As you have probably figured out by now, we loved this meal, and can confidently recommend that you enjoy this Sunday Brunch for yourself.
Disclosure: this wonderful Sunday Brunch was provided by the really cool folks at Roaring Fork. Thanks!
Towards the end of last year, I wrote separate articles sharing how Twitter and Facebook were excellent places to find up-to-the-minute travel deals.
Now that we are ten days into the new year, I thought I might do a little digging around to see what we might find from the “Twavelverse” in the way of travel deals on Facebook and Twitter.
Here is a “tweet” from Delta Airlines on January 5th that tells me that we might be on to something here:

As of this writing, Facebook has over 500 million users, and Twitter clocks in with 106 million users. Furthermore, baby boomer users (the biggest bubble of money in the US) have more than doubled on Facebook in the last year.
This means that purveyors in the travel and leisure category are all scrambling for the attention of these massive crowds of people. For them, it is a dream come true because they have direct free access to your home with your simple subscription.
In both environments, use the search tools to find your favorite resorts, hotel chains, restaurants, wineries, etc., follow them, and watch the travel deals stream onto your computer on a daily basis.
Follow our simple advice, and we believe that you will find 2011 to be the year of travel and leisure savings unprecedentedly found on Twitter and Facebook.
