Does Melatonin Work for Jet Lag?
If you poll your friends on Facebook and ask them how to prevent jet lag while traveling, invariably, someone is going to bring up the idea of taking a melatonin supplement.
But, is this an urban legend or a statement of fact?
According to the folks at Mayo Clinic, “melatonin is a hormone in your body that plays a role in sleep. The production and release of melatonin in the brain is connected to the time of day, increasing when it’s dark and decreasing when it’s light. Melatonin production declines with age. People commonly use melatonin for sleep disorders, such as insomnia and jet lag. Unlike many sleep medications, you are unlikely to become dependent on melatonin, have a diminished response after repeated use (habituation) or experience a hangover effect”.
Well, Mayo Clinic, that’s all well and good, but does it work to treat jet lag?
Their answer? “Evidence shows that melatonin can modestly improve jet lag symptoms, such as alertness.”

So, what say you?
Have you used Melatonin to help reduce the effects of jet lag? And, did it work? Leave us a comment below and share your experience.

Largest Luxury Brands By Regional Deployment
I was reading articles in my feed reader a few days ago and came across this interesting article from the folks at Cruise Industry News.
There are 19 key sailing regions around the world, and for 2019, these companies are the largest operators by region when it comes to the luxury cruise market:
- Caribbean: Viking Ocean
- Mediterranean: Viking Ocean
- Asia-Pacific: Silversea
- Northern Europe: Viking Ocean
- Alaska: Regent
- Australia: Viking Ocean
- West Coast: Crystal
- South America: Silversea
- Canary Islands: Hapag-Lloyd
- Indian Ocean/Red Sea/Middle East: Seabourn
- Bermuda: Regent
- Trans-Atlantic: Viking Ocean
- Canada/New England: Seabourn
- Hawaii: Crystal
- Africa: Ponant
- Panama Canal: Windstar
- U.S. Domestic Waterways (Great Lakes): Ponant
- Antarctica: Ponant
- World Cruises: Viking Ocean
While this likely falls into the “interesting things to know” category vs. some great shedding of light from on high; I did find it interesting to see what cruise lines are dominating the various regions of the world.
And, I suppose if you are interested in sailing one of these regions, this list might come in handy as a “first place to look” tool. Biggest doesn’t always equal best, but frankly, these are all excellent ocean cruise lines.

13 Things You Didn’t Know You Could do on a Cruise
Roughly 20-years ago, Carol and I returned from an ocean cruise and vowed that we would never do that again. The experience was horrible.
Fast forward to the 21st-century and our opinion has completely changed as the cruise industry has evolved from waiters running through the aisles singing Hot Hot Hot as they served mediocre food, to so many fabulous options available today.
And now, as the industry continues to evolve, did you know that you could take a ride on a submarine, bring your dog along, take a fabulous cooking class, or maybe even discuss world affairs with a professional diplomat?
To explore 13 things that you didn’t know you could do on a cruise ship, CLICK HERE.
