I suppose it’s quite possible that there exists no greater Phoenix/Scottsdale experts on where to enjoy a magnificent Easter Sunday Brunch than The Roaming Boomers®.

You see, we make this bodacious claim as we have fairly recently completed a dinning tour of the Valley’s very best Sunday Brunch spots.

For ten weeks, every Sunday found us in a different Phoenix/Scottsdale fine dining establishment sampling, enjoying, noshing, sipping, and delighting in the best Sunday Brunches that the Valley has to offer.

As it is quite traditional for many families to enjoy an Easter Sunday Brunch, we offer you our findings.

Below you will find hundreds of mouth-watering photographs, and the story of each and every one of our visits.  The articles are presented in the order of our visits.  Therefore, their order is not intended to rate one over the other.

The Top 10 Easter Sunday Brunches of Scottsdale/Phoenix

Sunday Brunch at Il Terrazzo, The Phoenician, Scottsdale

Our first stop was Sunday Brunch at Il Terrazzo inside the AAA Five-Diamond Phoenician resort.  We called the cuisine “gobsmacking”.  In fact, when our friends got to noshing on the treats in our table’s decadent tower of desserts, their heads slowly tilted back, their eyes rolled back, and a slight guttural mmmm proceeded deep from within their diaphragms. Sunday Brunch at Brittlebush Bar & Grill, Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, Scottsdale

 Our second stop was Sunday Brunch at the Scottish Gastropub, the Brittlebush Bar and Grill, inside the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa.  We enjoyed brilliant Scottish cuisine with an unusual southwestern twist.  We noshed on traditional haggis, black pudding, as well as cornbread french toast, and lobster mac & cheese.  Plus, when you’re done, you can play croquet in the lawn.  How cool is that?  Here our article: Exceptional Scottish Breakfast Cuisine With a Southwestern Twist.

Sunday Champagne Brunch at the Wrigley Mansion, Phoenix

Sunday Brunch at Cafe ZuZu inside Scottsdale, Arizona’s Hotel Valley Ho

The fourth stop of our Top 10 Sunday Brunches in Scottsdale and Phoenix found us at Cafe ZuZu in the AAA Four-Diamond Hotel Valley Ho.  The hotel was hip when it was built in 1956 before downtown Scottsdale even had a downtown.  Now, after a complete remodel in 2005, the hotel is a magnet for the hip, cool, and chic … all within a faithful 60s-vintage style.  Here’s a link to our article: Spectacularly Groovy Sunday Brunch at Cafe ZuZu.

Sunday Brunch at T. Cook’s inside the Royal Palms Resort & Spa, Phoenix

#5, on our Top 10 Sunday Brunches in Scottsdale and Phoenix found us at T. Cook’s inside the Royal Palms Resort and Spa.  The resort is a AAA Four-Diamond winner, belongs to the distinguished Historic Hotels of America, and was a favorite stopping place when President H.W. Sunday Brunch, Wright’s at the Arizona Biltmore

Sunday Brunch at Lon’s at the Hermosa

Week #8 found us enjoying Sunday Brunch with six friends at Lon’s at the Hermosa.  The restaurant bears the name of famed cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, and in fact resides in the “Casa Hermosa” (beautiful house) which he built back in the 1930s.  Our experience was most delightful, and I’m quite certain that we found the world’s best cinnamon roll.  Here’s are article: World’s Best Cinnamon Roll Found at Lon’s at the Hermosa Brunch.

Sunday Brunch at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North

Sunday Brunch at Camelback Inn Resort and Spa

Spring comes early in the Sonoran Desert.  Ofttimes, we can find wildflowers beginning to bloom as the weather begins to warm in late February.

Springtime at Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden is a treasure trove for professional and amateur photographers alike.  I shot this butterfly a few years ago at the Desert Botanical Garden, and it remains one of my favorite captures.

We just experienced our very first hot air balloon ride, and it was definitely one of those life-time memory experiences!

We chose Hot Air Expeditions because of their perennial award-winning status, their colorful balloons with a mammoth saguaro cactus on the side, and a champagne gourmet desert picnic at the conclusion of the adventure.

Make sure you read this post all the way to the bottom, we have a very big surprise for you!

We left the Deer Valley Airport at 3:30 in a large passenger van that doubled as one of the chase crew’s vehicles.  After a 20-minute ride, we arrived to our launch point in a desert clearing where there was plenty of smooth sand to get our balloon filled with hot air.

In roughly 15-minutes, the crew had the balloon upright, nine of us climbed aboard,  and we were off to float in the the dead quiet of the Sonoran desert breezes.

Floating aloft in our first hot air balloon left us with several impressions:

1. It is quite a remarkable thing to be floating with the breeze.  Because of this, if everyone were to be quiet in the balloon, there would be a complete and utter stillness as you move with the wind.  It’s really quite peaceful.
2. Looking out at the beauty of creation, with the approaching sunset painting the Sonoran desert and the distant mountain peaks with its beautiful orange hues, will take your breath away.
3. There was a certain, fun sense of adventure as we floated above the earth somewhere around 1,000 feet.
4. It’s definitely an experience we will want to have again.

Week #8, of our Top Ten Sunday Brunches of Scottsdale & Phoenix series, found us at Lon’s at the Hermosa.

Lon’s restaurant, named after cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, resides inside the Hermosa Inn.

Megargee, a native of Philadelphia, came West at the turn of the century, earning his way as a cowboy, bronco buster, stud poker dealer, commercial artist, and home builder, among his many occupations.

He spent time chasing an idealized notion of the American Dream of rancher, Indians, and settlers that was fading fast even during his time.

Along the way, his raw-boned charm snared several wives and earned him a well-deserved reputation as a ladies’ man. But it was his adobe studio, set amidst the creosote, that perhaps was the closest to his heart.

Over the years, to supplement his income, Megargee turned his  ”Casa Hermosa” (beautiful house) into a guest ranch.  In 1941, saddled with debt and a pending divorce, Megargee sold the property, and in 1992, after a string of owners, the property was purchased by a local resident and became The Hermosa Inn.

Today, the property is a member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America, and is frequently visited by those who would prefer to keep away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi.

It’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and eight of us descended upon Lon’s at the Hermosa after church.  As it was a beautiful, sunny 70-degrees, we decided to enjoy our culinary experience on the stunningly beautiful patio.

The smell of a mesquite-burning fireplace combined with the aromas coming from meats barbecuing on the nearby grill, and the soothing live guitar stylings immediately quickened our mind’s attention to the task at hand.

As the food began its way to our two tables, there was a somewhat entertaining flurry of hands and plates as we began our cacophony of breakfast delights.

First, and perhaps most unforgettable, was the pipping-hot, Fresh-baked Brioche “Monkey Bread” (caramel, pecan, cinnamon).  As this sweet manna from heaven made its way around the table, everyone’s response was the same: head tilted back, eyes softly closing, and a guttural hmmmm deep from within our very souls.

Seriously, Lon’s “Monkey Bread” has made all previously enjoyed piping-hot cinnamon rolls subservient, and complete star-struck wanna-bes.  It was that good!

As you can see from our photographs above, there was no shortage of wondrous things to enjoy.  The Short Rib Hash and Eggs ( poached eggs, grilled tomato, grilled country-bread) was unbelievable, while the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes (huckleberry compote, meyer lemon whipped cream) was certainly divinely inspired.

In fact, every single dish, as our sharing extravaganza continued, brought cheerfully raised eyebrows and a continued upward raising of our internal enjoyment meters.

As there were eight of us present, we give our Lon’s at the Hermosa Sunday Brunch experience 16 thumbs-up!  We highly recommend it, and strongly urge that you sample the “Monkey Bread”.

You should also know that you can avoid the Sunday Brunch crowds by enjoying the very same menu on Saturday mornings.

One of the things I love about travel photography is exploring my camera’s ability to take my eyes places I can’t naturally see.

I shot this a while back at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.  As I was doing a little post-production with the photograph in Photoshop, I was really excited with the perspective and color that I found in my photograph.

Week #7, of our Top Ten Sunday Brunches of Scottsdale & Phoenix series, found us at Wright’s at the Arizona Biltmore.

First impressions at the AAA Four-Diamond Arizona Biltmore (Part of the Waldorf Astoria Collection) are likely to leave you gobsmacked.

Built in 1929, this structure is a living architectural masterpiece, showcasing the groundbreaking influence of America’s most heralded architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Once inside this magnificent structure, the dumbfounded gawking continued as we made our way to the AAA Four-Diamond Wright’s at the Biltmore to enjoy our Sunday Brunch in a stunningly beautiful setting.

As we began to peruse the menu, the first thing we noticed is that the pricing of the Sunday Brunch was quite a value given the historic setting and magnificent offerings.

Week #7 – Sunday Brunch, Wright’s at the Arizona Biltmore

The lavish brunch buffet is $25/person and features breakfast favorites, house-made pastries and breads, fruits, cheeses, sushi, gourmet cold-plates like smoked duck/smoked salmon, and a dessert selection that is certain to have you putting in some extra time in the gym.

Furthermore, for an additional $10/person, you can also choose as many items as you like from their small plate entrée selections.  These are chef-inspired seasonal items that are beautifully prepared and certain to produce big smiles.

We attended our Sunday Brunch after church, and brought another couple along to enjoy the experience.  After sipping on mimosa’s and bloody mary’s, we all headed off to explore the vast array of delicacies available to us on the buffet.

One of the things first noticeable is that there are no big containers with messy spoons laying about.  Every single dish is individually prepared and neatly arranged in perfectly aligned rows inviting not only salivation, but a feast for the eye as well.  Plus, the instant you removed one of the small plates, a watchful attendant was immediately present to replace the dish and repair the hole in the presentation.  Very impressive, indeed!

Careful not to gorge ourselves at the buffet table, we now turned our attention to the small plate entrées.  As we were media types, the chef was determined that the four of us share and sample all of his creations.

We enjoyed Wright Way Benedict (canadian bacon, cranberry compote, sage hollandaise, soft poached egg),  House-made Doughnut (maple glaze, crispy bacon), Morning-style Flap Jacks (dried tart cherry, orange butter, vanilla gastric, warm syrup), Organic Chicken (fall spiced, walnut panzanilla, dried figs, parsley, brown butter drizzle), Seasonal Seafood (smoked salmon risotto, capers, chives, pickled onion, poached egg), Breakfast Beef (breakfast taco, char roasted flat iron, pico de gallo, scrambled eggs, local goat cheese), Vegetarian (rosemary polenta, blue cheese, crisp red pepper, parsley).

The benedict was divine.  The bacon doughnut was a surprising twist for the palate. All of the dishes were absolutely delightful.  However,  it was the flap jacks, believe it or not, that was bringing out a chorus of oohs and aahs.  The tart cherries, the vanilla gastric, the warm syrup.  Holy mouthgasm Batman! I’ll be dreaming about those babies for weeks!

I don’t mean to belabor the point, but those flap jacks had me seriously contemplating a short, little happy-dance right there in the restaurant!

Well, let’s calm down a bit.  The staff cleared away the seven small plates, sampling spoons and dishes, and made us ready for dessert.  Standing ready with our piping-hot cups of coffee, we made our way back to the buffet table to bring back tasty treats.  There was every imaginable delight, but what really caught the attention of the table was Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate Chip Pie, and Cinnamon Pumpkin Brulée.  Wow!

 You’ve probably surmised that we feel Sunday Brunch at Wright’s at the Arizona Biltmore is an extraordinary experience.  When I polled our table, I found eight thumbs up and big smiles all around.

For this week’s Friday travel photo, I thought I would share a shot from a very recent hot air balloon ride.

There were two other balloons up in the air with us and I was able to capture this beautiful scene while looking down on one of the others.  The scene in the background is a massive reservoir (Lake Pleasant) that feeds water down into the Valley of the Sun via a concrete canal system.

Week #6, of our Top Ten Sunday Brunches of Scottsdale & Phoenix series, found us at Elements restaurant, inside the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa.

Sanctuary Camelback Mountain found its way into our hearts when we were invited to spend a night at the resort nearly a year ago.  Here’s the video from our stay.

The legendary history of Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain began in the early 1950s when Charlie Chaplin’s son (Sydney) and a group of prominent Hollywood investors and stars envisioned a prestigious racket club modeled after the elite Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Today the property features 81 luxury mountain casitas, 24 spa casitas, and 7 distinctive mountainside estates for their guests to enjoy.  All enjoy remarkable views from their perch on the slope of Camelback mountain, offer world-class amenities, and have a very special designer’s “funk” added to the 1950s Frank Lloyd Wright style architecture.

Elements restaurant enjoys world-renowned fame from its celebrity chef, Beau MacMillan.  Chef MacMillan has won the prestigious Iron Chef America and is also a Food Network star.

 The Sunday buffet at Elements comes in two different options.  You can enjoy the buffet only for $32, or for $42 you can enjoy the buffet as well as ordering one of their signature entrées from the menu.  Both options include sparkling wine, coffee, and tea.

The buffet includes an omelet station, a whole host of wonderful delicacies, and also includes a fabulous dessert station.

As we were present to sample and report on their Sunday Brunch, we received the $42 option and started out with piping-hot cinnamon rolls.  Holy what a way to start a meal Batman!

For our entrées Carol opted for Ranchero Frittata (spiced chicken, jalapeno jack, black bean relish), and I was tempted by the very photogenic Pumpkin Zucchini Five Spice French Toast (macerated strawberry, pink pepper caramel).  I can’t begin to tell you what a treat the french toast was.  My taste buds were dancing in a melee of pumpkin, zucchini, and wondrous spices all vying for my attention.

My step-son Jerome was along on this journey and he was all smiles as he quietly swooned over Smoked Salmon Benedict (croissant, tomato, spinach, yuzu hollandaise).  Wow!  I was tempted to go havsies with him, but the thought of  sharing my french toast found deep wells of selfishness from within my soul.

Our waitress also told us about their Red Velvet Pancakes (white chocolate sauce, razz cherry syrup).  I was tempted to beg my way into two entrées but I figured a sugar coma whilst doing a Sunday Brunch review was probably not a good idea.  However, those pancakes are haunting me even as I type.  I’ve got to go back and try ‘em out!

Our Sunday Brunch at Elements restaurant was a wonderful culinary treat, and we even got to spend a few minutes before we left with Chef MacMillan.  When I surveyed the table at the end of the meal, I found six thumbs up!  We highly recommend the experience.

Week #5, of our Top Ten Sunday Brunches of Phoenix/Scottsdale series, found us at T. Cook’s in the Royal Palms Resort & Spa.

The Royal Palms Resort and Spa opened its doors in 1948 and became a destination of choice for discriminating travelers from around the world, including celebrities such as Groucho Marx and Helena Rubinstein.  We’ve also heard it mentioned that this was President H.W. Bush’s favorite resort when he and Mrs. Bush were in town.

This grand Spanish colonial style resort is a classic in Arizona and has earned the prestigious AAA Four-Diamond award as well as earning the distinction as a Historic Hotel of America.

Sunday Brunch, at T. Cook’s, is hailed as a Mediterranean Market Buffet where you are offered two different dining options.

For $33 a person, you are offered complete access to all the wonderful delights on the buffet with as many return visits as you like.  For $23 a person, you can choose the á la carte option where you select a specific entrée from the menu as well as one visit to the buffet table.

We both opted for the a la carte option.  Carol selected their Sunday Roast (weekly changing oven roasted meat paired with roasted vegetables, roasted potatoes, yorkshire pudding, and appropriate sauce), while I went with Mushroom and Eggs (two eggs any style on como batard bread with melted cheese and sautéed cultivated mushrooms, chopped tarragon and parsley served with oven roasted tomatoes and local bacon).  YUM!

For our trip to the buffet table, we found wonderful breads, pastas, ceviche, king crab legs, made-to-order omelets, waffles, a great variety of salads, and a dessert table that was a sight to behold — and taste!

Above and beyond the exquisite surroundings, and the mouth-watering brunch, the resort is also currently showcasing “Art at the Palms” where a different local artist’s work is on display in the stunningly beautiful courtyard each Sunday.

T. Cook’s Sunday Brunch at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa is a delightful experience and one that we most heartily recommend.  Not only will your palate enjoy the experience but your eyes will enjoy a beautiful feast as well.

We give it four thumbs up!

As Chef Lee Hillson and his crew are preparing their contest entry for the upcoming Arizona Taco Festival, we were invited in to sample and vote for our favorite taco.  Chef Hillson will then use the patron’s ballots as a means to decide which taco to take to the competition.

We invited friends to join us and we all arrived at 6:30 to an absolutely packed house.  There was a jazzy lounge singer crooning as we settled back into comfortable chairs to enjoy our evening.

Over the course of the next few hours we noshed on gourmet tacos, pollo verde chimichangas with tomatillo salsa, poutine (shredded beef short ribs over sweet potato fries w/ braising jus), mini-kobe hot dogs, and washed it all down with a delicious red wine chosen by the Sommelier/Manager Matt Weston (aka Cork Dork).

This was no ordinary lounge food.  No, this was lounge cuisine designed by Iron Chef Lee Hillson who has cooked on more than one occasion at the James Beard House in New York, hosted a Friends of James Beard dinner at the resort, and has received the prestigious AAA Four-Diamond Award for the last six years running.

If you looking for a fun night out on the town, we can highly recommend that you grab some friends and head over to the T. Cook’s Lounge for $2 Taco Night.
